Matt Camper, an entomologist at Colorado State University, said as many as 1/3rd of the adjacent apartments to an infested apartment get infested. This is consistent with our data particularly if pesticides were used causing bed bugs to flee the original infested unit.
The anatomy of a bed bug does not allow bed bugs to chew through anything. Bed bugs essentially have a straw allowing blood to be pumped into it and no other mouthparts for chewing.
Sealing holes, cracks, and seams helps to prevent the spread of bed bugs. The most difficult seam to seal is the one under the drywall and the floor. Typically, the baseboard is off the floor 1/2″ to allow the carpet to be tucked under it. It is problematic because the carpet tack strip is on the floor near this seam. It is best to remove this tack strip, vacuum the area, and caulk this seam while lying on your belly.
